The team behind the new study, in Science, determined the feather colors by analyzing the shape and density of melanosomes within fossil feathers. Melanosomes are nanoscale, pigment-bearing organelles within feathers.
The microscopic particles were first found preserved in a fossil—in this case, a prehistoric bird—by Vinther and his team in 2008. The particles had previously been interpreted in fossils as bacteria.
In modern birds, different types of melanosomes are known to produce different colors in feathers. Eumelanosomes are rodlike and are associated with the colors black and gray. Phaeomelanosomes are round and produce colors ranging from reddish brown to yellow. A lack of melanosomes makes white.

For several years, we’ve been talking on this blog about programs like Y Combinator, TechStars, SeedCamp, and many others. I call them startup accelerators. One thing I’ve consistently heard is that NYC needs its own startup accelerator. Well it is happening this summer, courtesy of the city’s own NYC Seed fund. The program is called SeedStart. Moderaterna hävdar att utanförskapet minskar. Detta är felaktigt. Enligt en ny uträkning från Riksdagens utredningstjänst har utanförskapet de senaste tre åren ökat med över 70 000 personer, skriver Thomas Östros (S).
Sverige är ett bra land. Men allt fler möter stängda dörrar. Ekonomin går med underskott när skatten sänks med lånade pengar. Klyftorna mellan människor ökar. Vi socialdemokrater vill satsa på fler jobb – inte ökade klyftor. Sverige ska tillbaka till överskott och starka statsfinanser. Full sysselsättning är vårt mål. Utanförskapet ska minska.
Den borgerliga regeringen vann valet år 2006 på frågan om att minska utanförskapet. Lösningen på utanförskapet var enligt Anders Borg – den moderata politikens arkitekt – ökade klyftor. Idén är enkel men tydlig: hotet om fattigdom ska vara den drivkraft som tvingar människor från utanförskap till arbete. Att minska utanförskapet har använts som argument när regeringen till exempel infört en hårdare beskattning av pensionärer, försämrat arbetslöshetsförsäkringen, stängt dörrar på utbildningsområdet och när tryggheten för svårt sjuka människor försämrats.
Regeringen har varit mycket framgångsrik i sitt arbete för att öka klyftorna i samhället. Den tiondel med störst inkomster har fått nästan lika mycket av regeringens skattesänkningar och reformer som 60 procent av svenska folket har fått tillsammans. Barnfattigdomen ökar. Unga vuxna lämnas utanför.
Men de ökade klyftorna i samhället har inte resulterat i en förbättrad arbetsmarknad. Tvärtom så är jobben färre och arbetslösheten högre. Arbetsutbudet har inte ökat.
I P1-programmet Godmorgon världen (21/3) hävdar Finansminister Anders Borg att ”utanförskapet påtagligt har minskat.” Detta är felaktigt. Vi har bett Riksdagens utredningstjänst studera utvecklingen av utanförskapet de senaste tre åren. Resultatet (Dnr 2010:335) är att utanförskapet har ökat med över 70 000 personer. Både om man mäter som moderaternas gjorde innan valet och om man mäter som moderaterna gjorde efter valet.
I valet 2006 så hade Moderaterna en tydlig definition – så kallade ”bred arbetslöshet” – på hur utanförskapet skulle beräknas. Modellen fanns bland annat på partiets hemsida och beskrevs också i tidskriften Ekonomisk debatt. Enligt denna valrörelsedefinition så har utanförskapet ökat med över 70 000 personer.
Efter valet bytte Moderaterna och deras högerallians till ett nytt sätt att räkna fram utanförskapet som de trodde skulle vara mer fördelaktigt. Modellen togs fram av Sven-Otto Littorin och Per Schlingman och har regelbundet redovisats av till exempel TT och Ekot. Denna modell låg bland annat bakom en stor moderat reklamkampanj våren 2008. Utredningen från utredningstjänsten visar att även enligt detta ”nya” sätt att mäta så har utanförskapet ökat med över 70 000 personer.
Jag menar att Sverige behöver en ekonomisk politik som lämnar idén om att ökade klyftor bryter utanförskapet. Sverige behöver en politik för ett konkurrenskraftigt näringsliv.
Entreprenören ska få stöd att starta, att anställa, expandera och att exportera. Entreprenörer som gör sin första anställning ska få sänkt skatt.
Näringslivets största utmaning är att hitta rätt kompetens. Det krävs omfattande investeringar för att omskola dem inom yrken vars kunskap inte längre efterfrågas. Vi vill investera i 50 000 fler utbildningsplatser på bland annat yrkesinriktad arbetsmarknadsutbildning. Unga som blir arbetslösa ska få stöd från första dagen. Den som saknar fullgjord gymnasieutbildning ska få stöd till detta.
Välfärden måste prioriteras framför skattesänkningar på lånade pengar. Under det senaste året har 25 000 välfärdsarbetare försvunnit.
För att klara framtidens jobb och stärka konkurrenskraften behöver vi investera brett. Sverige ska byggas starkt genom att vi investerar i vägar, järnväg och bostäder. Så kan människor flytta och pendla dit jobb och utbildning finns. Innovationskraften måste stärkas. Högskolan ska byggas ut med fler platser, men också riktade resurser för att höja kvaliteten i undervisningen. Forskningen måste prioriteras. Framtidsprogram ska utformas tillsammans med tjänstesektorn. Tillgången på riskkapital ska öka.
Valet till hösten är ett avgörande vägval. Ska vi prioritera det som skapar jobb – eller ska vi öka klyftorna.
