Basically yip it's because they are convex.
We use convex as compared to flat mirrors they help increase your field of view. The same way you see more in a spoon's reflection than a knife. So the increased field of view means that you are slightly more aware of other drivers.
However it's much harder to judge distances from a bent surface (think of the spoons reflection again). As car mirrors are only slightly convex (it's not obvious often) they are marked with the warning to make drivers remember the distortion of distances.
They has been some debate whether flat mirrors are safer. However in general most drivers accept it's better to be more awake of the area around you than the exact locations of things in a smaller area.

Yep! Drap em' I've done this for several clients and we kept the draperies both opaque as well as transparent. Both worked well. I've also used standing, dressing screens and potted plants to break the harshness of a mirrored wall/room to good effect.
