Although the refractive telescope is a much simpler design, the light passing through the lens gets bent at different angles and therefore the image is unfocused. This problem was solved by Newton when he replaced the lens with mirrors. With mirrors the light has an equal angle of incidence and reflection no matter what colour light rays.
